HUEY P. NEWTON
I was born Huey Percy Newton in Louisiana, the youngest of seven children.
During WWII, my father moved to Oakland, CA to escape Southern racism and
find better employment opportunities. As a teenager, I joined a gang, skipped
my largeley irrelevant and racially biased high school classes, and spent much
of my time on the streets. However, during my last year in high school, I began
to focus, and was able to graduate, although I was barely literate. I was the
embodiment of social promotion. Following high school, I enrolled at Oakland’s
Merritt College, but I continued to rebel and served six months in jail for
"assault with a deadly weapon." Upon my release, I became interested in
improving the dismal conditions of blacks in the U.S. I was dissatisfied with
black nationalist groups in the San Francisco Bay area, so in 1966 my friend
Bobby Seale and I created the Black Panther Party (for Self-Defense). We
stated our goals in a ten-point program that called for, among other things, full
employment, improved education and housing, an end to police brutality, and
the exemption of blacks from serving in a military that only served to preserve
the status quo in America. We organized armed patrols to monitor police
brutality in Oakland and affirmed the right of blacks to defend themselves, by
violence if necessary. Although many consider our group to have been "the
black KKK," I would ask you to consider the fact that we did in fact reach out
and create alliances with the Young Lords (a Puerto-Rican group), the Young
Patriots (an organization of poor whites), the Brown Berets (a Mexican-
American outfit), the Jewish Defense League, and Yellow Peril (a group
dedicated to improving conditions for Asians in America). We were not hate-
mongers or racists. In 1967 I was arrested for killing a (racist) Oakland pig,
who had attacked me. The Black Panthers realized that my imprisonment was
a part of a larger effort on the part of the government to suppress the BPP, and
began a campaign to “Free Huey” . The “Free Huey” movement allowed the
party to expand its following nationally. In September 1968, after a heavily
publicized trial, I was convicted of manslaughter, but the conviction was later
overturned due to "procedural errors." When I was released from prison in
1970, I sought to revive the party by stressing community service rather than
confrontations with police. The BPP established free breakfast programs for
children, ran free medical clinics, and gave away clothes and food. The FBI
viewed these programs, as well as the proud black attitude they reinforced, as
a threat to the white power structure, and made every effort to effect our
destruction through a variety of devious tactics. After I published my
autobiography, Revolutionary Suicide (1973), I fled to Cuba to avoid arrest on
various fabricated criminal charges. I returned to the United States in 1977 and
was awarded a doctorate in 1980 from the University of California for my
thesis: War Against the Panthers: A Study of Repression in America.

Huey P. Newton was shot and killed in Oakland on August 22, 1989.
